Additive manufacturing as seen by Cetim and CEA Tech
300 persons attended the additive manufacturing day which took place in Saint‑Étienne (France). This day was the result of the strategic partnership entered into by Cetim and CEA Tech in the aim of reinforcing their leadership in advanced manufacturing in order to support small and medium companies and industries.
The additive manufacturing day which took place in the technopole forum and at Cetim Saint‑Étienne on 16 October 2014 was a complete success, with more than 300 participants. This day is the result of the strategic partnership entered into by Cetim and CEA Tech and was in fact the second event organised by these two partners after the collaborative robotics day organised in Senlis (France) on 23 October 2013 within the scope of the Capme’Up programme.
Advanced manufacturing leadership
The agreement entered into in 2013 by CEA Tech and Cetim as regards advanced manufacturing aims to offer industrial companies shared resources (methodologies, expert assessments, software tools, equipment) and support towards the implementation of the digital factory. This day was of course organised within this scope.
Indeed, additive manufacturing is a rapidly developing technological breakthrough which requires control of a complete process, from the knowledge of the material to characterisation and inspection, including the functional design and the work processes.
In order to promote this technology, Cetim and CEA Tech have complementary skills and many resources: a product design office, a powder and nanopowder development platform, four additive manufacturing machines with their environment, five metallurgy and characterisation sections, two machining and finishing cells and four non-destructive testing and characterisation testing platforms. Moreover, the Carnot Cetim institute and CEA Tech have established privileged relationships with equipment suppliers and representatives throughout the French national territory (sixteen Cetim regional delegations and five CEA Tech agencies in various regions), in addition to, of course, a vast industrial and scientific ecosystem.
Towards better appropriation of additive manufacturing
This partnership is completed with an offer of technological distribution and transfer towards companies in order to foster the integration of additive manufacturing in small and medium companies. This was the main purpose of this day which genuinely attracted all the industrial companies which attended. Other individual or collaborative support actions are being performed to allow small and medium companies and industries to improve their competitiveness and establish their differences and to give them access to additive manufacturing equipment so that they can learn and control the technology in all confidentiality.
In addition to these actions, an ambitious multi-partner R&D programme on additive manufacturing will be started in 2015. This programme will last for 3 years and will be supported by an industrial club which will bring its vision of the demand. Moreover, this industrial club will be aimed at manufacturers of production, inspection and characterisation machines, suppliers of materials and also users wishing to obtain an essential technological advance to face the competition. This project will cover the main themes of additive manufacturing and pool the resources of CEA-Tech and Cetim for the benefit of the partner industrial companies.
