Active infrared thermography: Otecmi gets to the core of composites

Some 300 wind turbines will shortly be installed off of the Channel coasts. It is against this background and partly in anticipation of this contract that Otecmi, a non-destructive testing company located close to Cherbourg, France, decided to seek training in active infrared thermography.

"Otecmi mainly uses non-destructive testing techniques such as penetrant testing, magnetic particle inspection, X-ray and gamma-ray testing, explained Alain Maigrot, manager of NDT for the Aeronautical Sector. However, we were interested in getting a better understanding of the options offered by infrared thermography, especially in terms of testing composite parts which are becoming more and more widely used in sectors such as aerospace, automobile, railway and of course wind turbines".

In fact, when the part is excited by an external source (e.g.: a flash), active infrared thermography helps to detect any surface or sub-surface defects such as cracks, delamination, corrosion, water inclusions or inclusions of other foreign elements.

During the two days of training at Cetim, "we were able to carry out many tests on metal, plastic and composite materials using cameras with varying sensitivity ranges, and as such in a few hours we got a good grasp of the technique, its implementation, advantages and limits,” said Alain Maigrot. He went on to add, “Infrared thermography is rapid, efficient and offers a high degree of traceability. It holds great potential for the testing of composites and we are already considering several application sectors".
