Noise in heat treatment workshops

Heat treatment companies are concerned by European directive 2003/10/EC concerning the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to noise. Among the different possible solutions to reduce this nuisance, Cetim studied one solution consisting in covering a pump unit with a cowling.

This document is based on a concrete project carried out in a vacuum heat treatment workshop belonging to one of the participating industrialists. This document contains results and recommendations and presents procedures for the following tasks: measuring noise levels around the machine before soundproofing, definition of noise reduction targets to be met, studying the cowling and drafting specifications, consulting suppliers and comparing offers, choosing the contractor, performing works and acceptance.

When calculating the dimensions of the cowling panels, the opening necessary for ventilation and access to the pump must be carefully taken into account.
