Mean shear stress effect on fatigue strength of shafts
In order to optimise the fatigue design of transmission shafts (especially reduction gear shafts), one needs to know the influence of the complex stress state due to service loadings in continued or intermittent usage (rotating bending, torsion torque, shear, etc.). An approach combining calculations and tests was used to quantify the influence of the mean shear, produced by a shear force or by torsion, on the fatigue strength of representative components in terms of materials (quenched and tempered 30CrNiMo8 and 42CrMo4 steels) and geometries (two notch sharpness values). Comparisons with the NF E 22-057 and Manson-Coffin approaches have also been performed.
