Fatigue design of welded joints. FE modelling and damage criteria
This study provides a state of the art on the latest developments in the various methodologies for fatigue assessment and design of welded joints; which are mainly differentiated through the damaging parameter and the location of the critical zone where the fatigue crack occurs. Several classical approaches are available, based on: nominal stress, hot spot stress, local notch root stress or strain, fracture mechanics, etc. As these methodologies are often conservative for thin-sheet structures, several approaches specifically designed for the motor vehicle industry (PSA/Fayard, Volvo/nCode, Battelle/Dong, Lohr Industrie) are presented here.
