Drawing: GTT controls the selection criteria
Although drawing is a particularly quick, economical and effective way to manufacture parts, the technique is not necessarily suitable for all scenarios. In order to make the most informed choice, GTT opted for a comprehensive analysis of parts and digital simulation of the entire process.
Is it possible to manufacture the fittings for insulation panels that are used to equip methane tankers by drawing, bearing in mind that these parts (manufactured up to now by forging) must be able to withstand the thermal stresses linked to cryogenics with temperatures of - 170 °C?
To try and find an answer to this question, Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) called on Cetim, who developed a simulation method that makes it possible to analyse the geometric and mechanical qualities of the end part as well as its cost.
“Cetim provided us with a complete study”, explains Mohamed Sassi, project manager for developing new technology at GTT. “It is a very rich method that meets our expectations whilst addressing the question of drawing from all angles: residual stresses, equivalent plastic deformation, variation in
thickness, tooling required, estimated costs, etc. This study is very promising and we will be able to use the procedure for other parts of the same thickness”.
